What Exactly is GPS?

GPS is considered to be one of the most genius inventions known to man. Could you imagine a world that didn’t have an online map? We would be confined to the only things, or in this case places, that we know, and fail to learn about the areas around us, unless we explored the traditional map, without knowing for sure whether we’re going in the right direction.

It’s safe to say, that GPS has only improved the lives of people, and businesses, around the world. Today, in most cases, people cannot even travel to the other side of town without it, unless they know where exactly they’re going that is.

The GPS was designed, along with the sea-going chronometer, which was has a similar purpose to GPS, except for the fact that it helps one navigate the ocean, instead of navigating the land.

What is GPS?
GPS stands for a global positioning system. It is a navigation system, which is satellite-based and consists of 24 orbiting satellites, which makes up a network. This network of satellites spans to up to eleven thousand nautical miles in within six unique orbital parts, in space. With only two of these 2 of these orbits surrounding earth and circles the entire surface thereof in less than 24 hours. It thus moves at 2.6 kilometres per second, which is faster than any transportation that earth will ever have.

GPS is also referred to as NAVSTAR satellites. The first satellite of NAVSTAR was launched in 1978, which was before the mere idea of the internet even existed.

Each satellite has a transmitter power of up to 50 watts and transmits on three different frequencies and are built to last at least a decade, before having to be replaced with a better technological enhanced satellite.
The pathways of these satellites can transport them 60 degrees North, as well as 60 degrees South, in latitude. This mere setting allows one to be able to receive signal nearly anywhere in the world and at any time too. The fact that satellites are not above your location is the number one reason why your signal might be affected, especially in underdeveloped areas.

The Evolution of Technology for GPS
GPS was invented after understanding came about for the electromagnetic energy, known as the radio. Before the invention of the radio, ships and aircraft travelled at their own risk, not acknowledging the dangers of what it’s like to travel without a source of support in the air or somewhere far away from land, at sea.

Once the radio was developed in the 1920’s, it accumulated a massive amount of money for those who invented it and continued to work on increasing it as the digital age got closer and closer. When GPS was discovered in the late 70’s, however, the world turned a page and found a new way to get around easily and with satellites lined up around the world, made it extremely effective and easy to not get lost ever again.

Surprising Importance of GPS in Today’s World

GPS or Global Positioning System is a satellite based real time location service that can be used for wide array commercial and personal applications. The introduction of this advent technology has revolutionised our lives.

Commercialisation of taxi and other cab services with the use of GPS has paved a new way of travelling. In the business sector, it has been proven that with the introduction of GPS has led to more sustainable development of business and keep a track of its activities and employees. GPS has also been a very reliable tool in the hands of explorers and wilderness travellers. It is a very useful addition to many industries.

GPS can provide pin point location no matter what weather condition is prevailing in that area. It Is based on satellites located in space which transmit data to computers and receivers located in earth. It was initially created by the military for locating military personnel during deployment missions. Today it plays a more general public role used for locating destinations and finding roadways to the said.

Finding roads and shortcuts aren’t the only features of GPS. Stolen items can be tracked as well as valuable property, sharing coordinates and communication, locating disabled individuals and pets. A common feature among all smart phones now are satellite tracking which helps locate and keep kids and girls safe by updating the family.

Our society has become safer and convenient due to the tremendous impact of satellite location services.  Law authorities protect and located criminals on the go with the help of this technology.

Other than the said functions, GPS also provides other features as carrying electrical compass, displaying time, carrying barometric altimeters, and calendars and can also be used as a multi media device.

Aviation navigation, road transport, shipping and railway, weather conditions, atmospheric pressure determination, telecommunications, financial services and in recent trend social media are among the few applications and how GPS plays a vital role in our everyday activities.

There are actually two types GPS systems, namely the Global Navigation Satellite System and the Regional Satellite Navigation System. The owner of GPS is the United States of America.  Different versions of the system have been developed by Russia, China and of recently India too.

From the above stated facts and information, there is no doubt that the creation and invention of GPS is a another step forward for mankind and till date one of its most greatest inventions. It is not only a boon to drivers but to explorers as well as companies. In recent studies it is shown trying to integrate GPS in the educational sector to make the students and upcoming citizens more aware about satellite navigation.
